Message from the Provost
Message from the Director
Welcome to teaching and learning at Wayne State University (WSU)! The Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) is here specifically to help you achieve your teaching and learning related goals as part of our urban research institution with an access mission and a long-standing dedication to student success. We do this by offering all WSU instructors a full suite of teaching professional development services.
Many instructors come to their role as teachers with a great deal of subject matter expertise, but may not have had a similar preparation in course design, pedagogy, or assessment. To acknowledge this, OTL services are designed to address a range of prior teaching experiences. OTL consultants are well-prepared to help you address nuances in key aspects of teaching and learning that arise in traditional, hybrid, and online environments.
Our mission and vision underscore the success of our WSU instructors is foundational to student success. Evidence on learning clearly points to teaching that is student-centered and actively engages students in their learning. The WSU Teaching Handbook is designed to bring resources to all WSU instructors, at any point in their career and across the disciplines. Our goal with the handbook is to start a dialogue with you on how best to address critical aspects of course design, pedagogy, and assessment.
The WSU Teaching Handbook also reflects the OTL emphasis on being an integral campus partner for the success of all WSU students. Our team regularly partners with other key units such as: University Libraries, Student Disability Services, Provost's Office Student Success Initiatives, Computing and Information Technology, and senior academic leaders across the university.
Located in Midtown Detroit, we also understand that our instructors value resources that are available in person or on social media platforms and at the individual, department, school / college, and institution wide levels. Finally, the OTL is always available to you informally (in person, by phone, and virtually)! We look forward to assisting you in reaching your teaching goals!
Dr. Mathew L. Ouellett,
Former Associate Provost and Director
